Stonewall Dutch Defense Refuted in this Game

It requires King sized balls to declare that a well established chess opening has been refuted. I recall Alex Yermolinsky berating Dmitry Gurevich for playing the Dutch Defense because of the way the first move f5 irreversibly weakened Black's King Side.

The following game played at the the Internet Chess Club is a refutation of the Stonewall Dutch Defense. Just teasing! White swapped off Black's dark squared Bishop because Black's choice of pawn structure, namely c6,d5,e6, and f5 permanently weaken all the dark squares.

F4thebird, playing out of America, starts an unjustified pawn avalanche on the King side grossly overestimating his chances. Observe that he retreated his d7 Bishop to the e8 square after is was attacked by the unassailable horse at e5. Like the Knight was actually going to capture the pathetic stonewall Dutch Achilles heal!?!

In the following diagram, "Black's attack" has ran out of steam and he is still stuck with his miserable Bishop while White's Steed at e5 is optimally positioned. White offered a Queen trade which would lead to lost ending if accepted, so the cross bearing American name F4thebird walked face first into a well known tactical them called attraction/deflection.

See if you can find the move that would force a civil chess player to resign like a gentleman. Black chose to let his 53 seconds expire rather than resign. I am sure his Blood pressure was quite elevated as he watched his time expire.

BTW, do all Americans have crude, inane, loutish, sexist handles at ICC?

  2. My God!! what a small world!!! Cliff Bunch never told me he was good at chess. He helped my jack ass of an ex husband with an odd acoustic issue, that I never understood at a construction site not far from Houston proper. Something about the compostion of the soil as I recall.

    1. Rose,

Would you know Pete Kappler? I know this is a blast from the past, but I knew him, sort of, when he was a big shot at Apple or maybe Google and writing chess playing, labor of love, programs on the side.

So I thought about him when reading a book about chess psychology by Rowson. The author was talking about a match between Julian Hodgson and Michael Adams. Julian claimed he saw more and did more calculations than Adams, but Adams kicked his ass in the match 5-1.

Peter, rated around 2050 at the time, would make odd comments about how weak the masters were in places other than Austin, Texas. The oddity, of course, is why would you care what a low rated expert though about a 2300 Master. Pete is a talent but the engineer in him leads him down the wrong path in many chess games calculating when he should be more focused the "flow of the river"

Now I remember I think, He was like the 75th employee Apple hired or something ultra impressive to borrow a phrase from lawyer Mike Simpson!!

    2. Cliff Bunch played at the now shut down Dave Macky chess studio in Houston Texas. Cliff was intense character who believed the Meran defense refuted the Queen's Gambit. Other players from that era were police officer Joe Innocencio, John Hall. Lewis McClary, Bill Reuter, Wheeler, Glen Wilson, Rubit, very talented tall kid named Campbell, Matlock, Jesse Tuggle, stormy newton, David John, Moss, the late Mark Diesen, Gaskill. The place became a poker gambling site that still called itself a chess club Cant remember if it was Durham or Shepard street?

    3. I agree with your remark about Pete kappler who is a nice polite guy but carries on like he is much better than he is. He played J.P. Hyltin out of San Antonio once where Pete was much better out of the opening, but melted down trying to calculate the precise best winning variation. Hyltin gave Pete a mercy draw cuz they were buds I think. Hyltin knew Im John Watson well and was pissed off when he lost a game after following analysis on French defense line in Watson’s book. Watson harshly criticizes philosopher Stuart Rachels for unprofessionally criticizing campomanes as being a nasty politician liar.
If you ask me, JP should have checked the analysis rather than blaming the venerable French defense author who once did the equivalent of a gofundme long ago asking fellow chess players to help him pay off his medical bills. Hyltin felt slighted that watson did not reply to his snail mails regarding perceived holes in Watson analysis over JP's pet line. I miss the old Menger Hotel crowd where Greg Wren and Selby organized events in the haunted edifice near the Alamo. Was easy to find sex on the riverwalk if you were having a lousy tournament! Thanks to Waco organizer Matt Potts who wondered like me why Alexy Root had a tepid review of the Rachel's book. An finally thanks much to my old compadre Forrest Marler for his efforts in gloomy world of prison chess!!! Also Rodney Thomas and Barjona Hood my brothas

  3. Conrad Schormann has intense, unrelenting contempt for the weakened Black Squares that the second player cedes less than ten moves into the opening! Conrad is quite proud of his rhyming scholarly articled titled Do not touch the Dutch. Very artistic Dude!!

  4. Chess players have long memories and many Detroit Michigan chess nuts remember Alex Yermolinsky's famous quote where he proudly exclaimed "Fuck the USCF". Alex was just fresh off the boat from Russia and proudly showed off his command of English language expletives.

How odd that he now works for USCF indirectly selling the Russian phrase "Every Russian School boy knows to capture back with g pawn, weakening king side, but keeping white pieces off the important central square e4!!!

    2. ICC Chess player Superboy loves playing the stonewall dutch even though he runs out of time trying to trade off his bad Bishop. He has beaten some good players, but needs to drop the inferior opening if he wants to move to next level.

GM Ron Henley odds espouses the stonewall dutch despite its many positional defects. Ron managed to wheedle his way into Karpov's good graces and has talent as a politician. Must say I am surprised his Henley Files web site actually respects the anti dutch bg5. Wish he would move back to his roots and Houston where he started out. Spread some of his knowledge to the massive scholastic programs there!!
