Widening the Beachhead

In armed combat, a beachhead is a defended area within the enemy position where two armies are engaged or fighting. Not surprisingly, widening the beachhead occurs in war games like chess. In the following position involving only pawns, Black temporarily goes down a pawn to create a maurading King Zugzwang position.

Black paradoxically, moves his King Backwards to c7 or in reverse which is always winning according to Bill Reuter. This strategy allows the second player to get to the a4 square uncontested as the second diagram shows.

Despite White's extra pawn, he is in Zugzwang and will lose both queenside pawns and the d4 pawn resulting in him likely tipping over his King. Widening the beachhead effectively means spreading out your attacking area(creating a path for your King into your opponent's position) oftentimes at the cost of a pawn. It is a common theme in King and Pawn endings

Reminds of some commentary by Mohammed Abdul Malik which talks about weird chess players, math nerds and even programmers or software engineers/data scientists. He may have used the word eccentric and not in a bad way.

Would love to know if Alexander Troup would support the view that orgasms by the hand or insertion are more intense and lasting after a hard fought chess game!!

  2. There is not doubt in my mind United Kingdom players are grossly underrated!! I frequently dominate alkhateeb (IM)
The proof that he is not an International Master is that I beat him repeatedly AND I only have a 1500 rating at ICC!!! I just crush him mercilessly. I am thinking about contacting FIDE and request they investigate his bogus title.

  3. ave question about a lawyer who collects unreasonably high medical bills for Hospitals, Doctors and Ambulance companies. Attorney Michael Hassenplug says he wants to defend medical professionals from clients with a "welfare mentality". An article by Lizzie Presser disclosed the severely weakened cancer patients were incarcerated for not paying exorbitant bills for treatments whose prices and costs were NEVER DISCLOSED!

The aggressive Coffeyville, Kansas counselor never reveals what he earns for his collection litigation. You could ask Derek Dustman who was also legally threatened with a jail sentence for his debt to an ambulance service. I heard this lawyer is an excellent chess player. Do any of you know hime?

    2. Just watched shadowbane let his time expire against Spanish GM Magodevic at ICC. Magodvic was a move away from checkmate and the American PUNK Shadow Bane had 2 minutes left and DID NOT RESIGN!!!

Martin Stahl, of Joplin Missouri, writes politely about the scum that do this, but I have no patience for it!!

Augustus Brunetti wrote an insightful article about the affable Network computer admin.

Louis, sole proprietor of Chess Fox, also condemns this immaturity indicative of a poor upbringing and bad manners and disrespect for fellow competiors

Nobody has coached more players than Louis!!! His protégé Shiela Cancino has also been wildly successful in chess coaching and overall life lesson category!!

  4. I am an American living in Iran who plays at ICC. I have had significant issues with Switzerland player gianky59 .He is low rated player who chooses not to resign, but let his time expire in losing position. Is it possible to contact Internet chess club to terminate gianky59's account or at least suspend it? He censors everybody that he loses to which is about everybody! Thanks so much to any American who could help me on this irritating and immature online chess club member.

Also THANK GOD citizens of the US HAD THE SENSE TO ELECT Joe Biden and evict the current Nazi occupying Pennsylvania Avenue address!!!

  5. Wanted to take the time for a RIP to Ian Mulholland. I found out about Ian playing a cat named metaphysical at the Internet Chess Club. The philanthropist, Bohemian artistic dude also battles his anger which manifests as disconnecting in lost positions. I believe to reset or start afresh MeTaPhYsIcal retired his MAD-Cobra handle at ICC probably due to multiple reports of his incivility and RUDE conduct.

SO metaphysical/mad-cobra, don't go it alone accept love and embrace Jesus Christ as your personal savior. His loves is boundless. Love you my brotha!!

  6. I watched a William Reuter dismember Mitch Vergara in San Antonio Texas and thought that is where he lived. I can't count the times that I forgot about a Bishop moving backwards and capturing a piece that I THOUGHT HAD MATED MY OPPONENT!!!

IM Jeremy Silman did NOT UNDERSTAND Reuter's book and wrote some negative shit about it somewhere!!!! M Vergara cried real hard after losing to Reuter and never really realized how dominated he was from start to finish. Ask Joe Binder.

A very weak USCF player with an average rating of less than 1200. Never learns from his mistakes and also full of heat and vengeance. A Christian bearing false witness. He reminds me of the is guy I used to CRUSH when I lived in Dallas.

How many of you ICC bullet chess addicts get an extreme rush of satisfaction after your opponent, out of anger and frustration, disconnects after you have DOMINATED AND CRUSHED THEIR EGO. I just kicked the crap out of donlaw71 who always disconnects in losing positions. I LOVE BEATING HIM DOWN INTO SUBMISSION

    4. Have any of you played Handle DragonSpririt at ICC? A strong player with a bad internet connection who will ask you to abort game because he will not pay an extra $20 per month for a better Internet Service Provider.

DragonSpirit has deep disdain bordering on hatred for blitz players who ask for takebacks or those who disconnect in losing positions.

1: No whining... this means no takebacks.
2: Mouse slips happen... like a bad referee, they're part of the game!
3: It's only 6 mins per game .... if you want more time then play games with
      higher TCs
4: If you feel the need for takebacks because of mouse slips, then, buy a
      better mouse
5: Given enough takebacks everyone can win every game. I don't expect to win
      every game
6: You won't win every game... even if you got every takeback possible
7: If you disconnect because you can't takeback, I will adjudicate for a win.
8: If you can't find a good enough move to beat me in 3 mins you won't do it
      in 5, 10, or 15 mins either

    5. donlaw71 is also a pornography addict which is quite common among chess players. Chess has an anal domination theme so not surprising.

  7. Internet Chess Club Patzer lameduck wrote a review about a book written by GM GM Boris Alterman on the middlegame. Like many Americans "who sound intelligent", he wrote a glowing account of the Grand Masters brilliant middlegame play, gambits etc.

However lameduck himself is an angry WEAK player who censors or noplays people who beat him which is about 80% if the members of ICC who regularly DOMINATE him. He does not learn from his mistakes and reacts with anger rather than learning from his myriad mistakes. A loser in life and chess. Just another USA fish with an unjustified inflated EGO

I dominate KINGZINSKI at ICC in 5 minute, 3 minute and bullet. He censored me after I CRUSHED him 12 straight games. He lets his time expire and I add more time to increase his anger to the level of where he disconnects and forfeits.

On a more chessic note, Certified Public Accountant(CPA) Sagar Shah from India does an exemplary job of expounding on the subtleties of widening the beachhead. Much respect to his wife Amruta for tolerating his addiction to the Royal Game!!!

    2. Thomas Willemze Claims his opening tome on the center counter or Scandinavian defense, 1 E4 D5, is Unsidesteppable which is easy enough to refute. You can turn it into an advance French defense or even a Blackmar Diemer gambit. His claim that he book is low maintenance is also spurious and irresponsible of any book author opening theorist!!!!’

  8. You are definitely right about lameduck. Likely a sub 100 IQ guy. The same for Australian player CraigK who censors anybody who won't give him a replay. I beat him mercilessly and do not improve my game against his weak play so I do not play bullet with him anymore.

A shout out to my bro Broken Pawn who writes a great blog about malcontent chess players and the addictive nature of the game we all love!! Even though him and butte Hank play way too much memorized openings they do not understand, I LOVE BOTH THOSE DUDES.

Also much love to Sergii Pryyomov who is an IM who lets his children use his account. So don't get a big head if you beat Serg2008 at ICC. He is gentlemen who I respect immensely!!

  9. There is this dude named Divinity at ICC whose surname is mcclanahan. He is maybe a strong C player around 1450 USCF rating. He has a lot of Biblical Scripture and dark philosophy about death in his finger notes. I just love dominating him! He does seem to understand the work of the existentialist Sartre at a level much higher than his weak chess skills.

    1. Lameduck sounds a lot like modestog who noplays or censors anybody who will not play him over and over. I beat the guy 3 games in a row one day and got censored apparently for not giving him a rematch over and over. He is an average player with a way above average temper.

    2. "NidhChess disconnected and forfeits" This is quite common especially amongst the weaker ICC players. NidhChess is a very weak provisional player who barely knows the rules. Why do they give rank beginners a provisional 1600 rating?

I know Mike Crocket would agree with this train of thought. Mike is sort of self centered like many chess players. I sensed that after witnessing his loss to Sergey Galant in Stillwater Oklahoma where he willingly entered what he thought was a dead drawn position only to be completely outplayed by the Russian accountant!!!

Mike though he was untouchable playing the Kings Indian Reversed his pet opening, but was just ground down by Galant

I believe he was friends with the much more private ICC player NYNH who is stone cold in love with the Bf5 version of the Slav Defense. He will invariably let his b7 pawn fall after Qb3, BUT his master level piece play usually wins out.

  10. Does anybody remember a guy named Forest Cole who played in Houston Texas at the 1999 southwest open? I am asking because his USCF rating was maybe 1300 and he got slaughtered in the Open Section not winning a single game. Was it because he was from Austria or England and they forced him to play in upper section. He was a gentleman, well mannered etc. There were plenty of other weak players from Texas who just chose to play up even though they would not have even broken even in the Amateur section. That was one of the last tournaments where I saw Steven Grubbs and Hobart.

    1. Hi Billy,

I was there in 1999 and played in that tournament. I do not remember Forest, but you can probably look it up at the USCF website where they have all the cross tables digitized I think.

Did you ever play at Dave's Chess Studio?

I hesitate to make contact with the guys this way but here goes:

So I saw a reference here to Dave's Chess Studio and recognized some of the names. A little reluctant to make contact this way, but I was there in Mid 90's. I remember a lot of the guys and will just list last names in the name of privacy and hope I don't' offend. Matlock, Innocencio, Campbell, Yeung, Burford, Tuggle(who passed away before I played there) Wheeler, Chalker, Reuter, Rubit, Lau. There are others but I will stop. I feel like I have lived two lives since then but will never forget the good times at Daves.

Again, I know this is far from ideal way to reach out, but would like to know how folks are doing.

  11. Does anyone know if Vladimir Bagirov's heart attack was due to chain smoking or alcoholism? Just read piece by Colorado's Bill Wall where he enumerated the dates of chess players who died of stroke or heart attack. Found an article my Brit Nigel Short, who after bragging about beating Tal, went on to mention what a genius, brilliant guy Tal was etc. Mr ursine took some heat for criticizing Wesley So's Roman Catholic faith. Prayer or not, the Philippine juggernaut would beat Nigel 9-1 in a 10 game match. Short's 1 point might come from two courtesy draws when Short is moving the White pieces around looking for random tactics.

  15. I know of KINGZINSKI chess player in real life. He is much different than his online persona. He is modest, humble, attractive in his own way. Maybe he just uses chess as an outlet to vent anger that builds up during the work day? Can you blame him??

Read Joshua Pham. I don't think Kingzinski would get upset if attendant misspells his name at a Starbucks. It is hard to to take Pham's advice seriously if he if even thought the misspelling of a name at a leisurely haunt like Starbucks would be stress inducing

    1. He is target practice for me. I sometimes lose to Kingzinski only when I play an intentionally inferior line to challenge myself. When he reaches what he perceives as a losing position, he will let his time expire. Poor guy, feel sorry for him in a way.

Damen at chess.com disconnects a lot like he does and lies when his account gets suspended, blaming it on the wifi. German player muehlenkoelsch is a good sport.
