Second Rank Skewer common Motif in Rook and Pawn Endings

This 1940 chess composition by Prokes was in Practical Chess Endings by Irving Chernev. This book was emphatically espoused by the late NM Jim Gallagher of San Antonio,TX. Jim believed that far too many class players were deficient in the endgame phase of The Royal Game.

The idea behind the second rank skewer in this position is to advance the g6 pawn to g7 which places it on Black's second rank where the Black monarch also resides at c7. The Black Rook is then forced to attack the pawn from g6 to prevent its promotion to Queen.

White reacts with Ra1 setting up the skewer if the Rook captures the immune g7 pawn. This combined with the threat of Rook to a8 also threatening a Queen promotion is sufficient to force resignation.

Would like to close with a little tribute to the good old days in San Antonio chess when Selby Anderson was editor. Will close by listing some of the Players that I remember from that region: Martin Gordon, JP Hyltin, Eric Dimazana, Mitch Vergara, Mitchell White, Tony Alston, Greg Wren, Larry Moss, Steve Young, Pete Gibson, Enrique Rios, David John, Shawn Noland, Sonny Kamberi, Bill Wheeler, Jesse Matlock, Matt Campbell, Dave Mackey, John Hendricks, Paul Muljadi, Gregg Stanley, Steven Grubbs, Donald Flournoy, Randall Schwarz, ....

  1. Good to see the name of Enrique Rios in circulation. He successfully essayed the terrorist opening in 90s in Texas. See Following game related to the refutation Whatley claimed to have found of the so called terrorist opening.

I was in the crowd in 2000 at the US Junior Open/U.S. Junior Closed in Baltimore when NM Enrique Rios representing the U.S. Junior Open crushed IM Eugene Perelshtyn representing the U.S. Junior Closed in an exhibition match in front of about 200+ people. Needless to say, when Rios started as white with 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 there were many laughs in the audience and quite a smile on Perelshtyn's face, however that smile quickly turned to shock after 2..Nc6 3. Bc4 g6 4. Qf3 Nf6 5. Ne2 0-0 6. d3 Na5 7. Bg5 Nxc4 8. Nd5! and Rios won quite easily. I'll try to see if I can get the complete gamescore from Rios. Rios played it regularly in serious tournament competition, even defeating a ~2350 Sonny Kamberi in 40/2 SD/1, before I put an end to the opening with the brilliant. 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Bc4 g6 4. Qf3 f5!!

Martin Gordon was also a tournament director in San Antonio. Maybe one the worst TDs in USCF history. He did not really know the rules and everything was at his discretion. He also was terrible about getting the tournaments started on time. He was very close to the chess playing sailor Steve Smollen who was one cool bridge playing dude.

The Smollon I know literally saved us from having to move out of our home which had a horrible mold problem in many of our air conditioning ducts. He got rid of condensation in the ductwork and fixed up the insulation in entire A/C system. A couple of weeks later we tested for black mold and it had gone down a whole bunch. He seemed like busy guy. Surprised he has time for chess!!!

  3. It takes a real brave person to criticize the TD, especially when you are too much of a coward to to tell us who you are. I played in San Antonio frequently long ago and Gordon did a fine job. Get a life man!

Whoever wrote this is playing on the excessively inflated egos of chess players to GOOGLE THEIR OWN NAMES! Call it ego surfing or vanity surfing, but USA Today article by Kim Komando seems to think that enough negative stuff returned by Google searches could cost somebody their job. I don't see why since 80% of the crap on the web is false or lies!!

Even the super strong IM types like the late Jim Gallagher eked out livings teaching chess when they would have been fantastic lawyers or engineers or Finance legends like Patrick Woolf or Ron Henley.

    1. Did any of you all catch the scathing criticism of IM John Watson over a book written by Stu Rachels? My Mom knew John Jarecki's mother who knew Stuart well as both of the youngsters were big shots in early 80s. Carol stayed sexy and hot well into her 60s. I would stare at her at Ballys in Vegas when she was in her swim suit between rounds. She was a kewl and fair TD.

Watson says that Rachels book is good but that Stuart directed much unfair and unsubstantiated criticism at other GMs over some small sounding thing like a mean stare or Campomanes for seeming like a sleazy dishonest politician.

Rachels did have that side of him that could not tolerate any form of criticism. I took lesson from him at a US Open one year and realized quickly he had deep disdain for fish like me who memorized opening like the Pelikan Sicilian which was a favorite of GM Tom Kayma who wisely invested his time in becoming a 6 figure earning CPA. Tom was a Texas Longhorn who was smart enough to balance blow jobs with chess and avoid the nerd path traveled by many one dimensional chess players.

Stuart also had contempt for anyone who liked Ayn Rand. This put him at loggerheads with razorback William Orton who dated an attractive woman who married an IM who used to play a lot in Stillwater Oklahoma. Stu majored in metaphysics so I guess his opinion is to be valued on this matter.

Just remember guys, the only reason you eat is to produce more sperm. There is no God.

  5. I think Matt Campbell ended up being a lawyer in Colorado and Matlock spent time in Jail. They both enjoyed wacky tabaccy at the chess club in Houston long ago. Good guys. Glad to hear about Matt's successful career in Durango!!

    1. Speaking of lawyers did you read about how attorney Craig Kessler was assaulted by his own client after jury returned a guilty verdict? One of Arizona's finest, Chet Jack Wadsworth Maley, stabbed his girl friend to DEATH and was then punched Kessler in the face for not being able to get him off!!!!

Well Chet, at least you will have plenty of time for chess in prison unless they put your out of your misery with a lethal injection hahahheheheheheheh
